  2. covered by American television, and there was a 
  3. period when he was the most-talked-about 
  4. intellectual on the planet. And then, long before he 
  5. died, all that went away. Many people turned 
  6. against him because they found his ideas didn‚Äôt 
  7. hold up or didn‚Äôt fit with their thinking. They found 
  8. that he was too opportunistic; they found that he 
  9. would fling off an idea at random without thinking 
  10. about it. They found that he was too easy to buy, 
  11. he was too available on the speech-giving circuit, 
  12. and somehow a bad aura collected around him for 
  13. those and probably 50 other reasons. So he was in 
  14. decline long before he died, which I think was 1980.
